Are College Students Covered?

2011-08-19

Just as classes start, we thought this might answer some questions about your student's coverage.  It comes from the folks at Allstate.

Remember students must maintain their Full Time student status (if they drop a class or two they may drop below full time status).  Also if they are renting an apartment and don't live there during the Summer months there may be an issue, most policies will not cover a claim if the dwelling was not occupied for more than 60 days.

It's suprising how affordable a renter's policy may be....many only costing around $110 per year depending on the amount of coverage needed by your student.

Children Away at College

We have had many questions asked about this situation.

If the customer’s child is attending college and is staying in a dorm, fraternity or sorority housing, the contents and liability coverage will extend for the student. The contents will be covered for the named perils of the policy and depending on the type of policy will determine if there is full coverage or 10% limitation.

If the student is renting another residence such as an apartment and will be living there year round and not coming home for breaks and summer vacations, the student will need to secure a Renter’s Policy. In essence, coverage exists for anyone who fits the definition of an "Insured Person" under their respective policy.

Each case will need to be evaluated based on the situation and circumstances at the time of a covered loss.
